Possibly the first Californian dish, named after its birthplace, now known as Placerville, Hangtown fries were invented during the California Gold Rush in the 1850s. Legend has it that the dish originated from the famous hotel El Dorado, when a miner, just getting rich, burst into a room demanding the most extravagant dish in the house.
